General Eye Exam
Everyone should have regular eye exams, although your age, your overall health and your risk of develping eye problems will determine the frequency of these exams. Optometrists generally recommend that you have an eye test every two years.
Contact Lenses
Whether you are already using a contact lens or are considering them for the first time, remember that you need professional advice to determine your contact lens prescription. It is the job of the optometrist to advise you on the type of lens best suited for you.
Paediatrics
If a child has 1 myopic parent, there is a 1 in 4 chance of becoming myopic. If a child has 2 myopic parents, there is a 1 in 2 chance. We recommend these higher risk children should be getting their eyes monitored at least annually even if they are not myopic.

After “THE” Bernie Lanigan retired in 2022, optometrist Ms Laura Matthews is continuing his high standards of care, rapport and service. Graduating with a Bachelor of Optometry in 2017 with first class honours at the University of Auckland, Laura is therapeutically endorsed to manage ophthalmic conditions including foreign bodies, infection and dry eye syndrome.
As a member of the Corneal & Contact Lens Society of Australia and the Dry Eye Society, she has a range of the latest research and industry recommendations at her disposal. During your appointment, Laura will conduct a variety of tests to evaluate your general eye health and diagnose any possible disease or condition.
Our eye tests comprise of a wide variety of steps to test your visual acuity, binocular vision, pressures, ocular health and colour vision and perimetry, when necessary. We use various instruments including Optical Coherence Tomography and topography, when indicated.
At Bernie Lanigan Optometrist, we can provide you with detailed guidelines on the best way to take care of your eyes, what measures to take to secure your vision, whether you are at risk of developing an eye disease and which glasses or contact lenses (if any!) are right for you.
